Luke 16:8 (The Message) "Now here's a surprise: The master praised the crooked manager! And why? Because he knew how to look after himself. Streetwise people are smarter in this regard than law-abiding citizens. They are on constant alert, looking for angles, surviving by their wits. I want you to be smart in the same way—but for what is right—using every adversity to stimulate you to creative survival, to concentrate your attention on the bare essentials, so you'll live, really live, and not complacently just get by on good behavior." Matthew 27:32 (New International Version) The Crucifixion As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. Steven Trapnell makes the following observation: Cyrene was a colony founded by the Greeks on the coast of North Africa. It is possible that Simeon might have been a Jew who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover; but it seems more probable that this Cyrenian who carried the Cross of Christ was a Negro, coming as he did from North Africa. Such an honour and privilege, initially granted to only one man, was given not to a Jew but to a Gentile: not to a Judean but to a Cyrenian; not to a white man but to a Negro.
